Ask most people what they know of Mozart´s music and the inevitable answer is almost certain to be „Eine kleine Nachtmusik“. Indeed, for many this work is the quintessence of Mozart´s oeuvre. What is the attraction of this piece and why is it so popular? For one thing, the theme is easy to understand - clear and well defined. And the melody is instantly recognizable. In fact it is one of Mozart´s greatest successes: conceived and written, like many of his works, with a light but masterly hand.

What we know of „Eine kleine Nachtmusik“ is not the complete work, however. The first minuet and trio have disappeared and do not figure in any of the contemporary transcripts. The work itself did not appear in print for the first time until 36 years after Mozart’s death, and the composer’s original manuscript only came to light during the Second World War. “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” as we know is one of the most popular classical works of all.
Text adapted from Rudolf Angermüller

The Marionettentheater Schloss Schönbrunn has created a ballet based on the piece. It is directed in a fanciful and entertaining manner by Leonard Salaz. “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” is a fantasy, light and airy, like the music which inspires it. Full of imagination and feeling, it is a dream without words which will appeal to all ages.
